TRAINING COURSE

Awarding Body: National Plant Operators Registration Scheme NPORS
Training course type: On-site training and assessment, On-site Experience Worker Test (EWT) assessment only
Duration: 1-5 days, dependant on any previous experience
Minimum age: 16
Novice candidate numbers: 3
Experience Worker Tests per day: 6

Card options: 5-year NPORS traditional card & certificate, 2-year CSCS trained operator red card

WHAT DOES THE A1 SAFETY TRAINING NPORS
EXCAVATOR AS A CRANE TRAINING COURSE INCLUDE?
Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
Be able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation
Be able to locate, identify and explain safe working loads, lifting capacity chart and explain different lifting configurations and working ranges
Identify and explain different lifting procedures, explain What task could fall into each category
Identify and explain centres of gravity, calculate estimated weights of loads
Identify any overhead / proximity hazards
Be able to agree the signal codes / hand signals, direction of movement, safe working and safe landing, placement zone with the slinger / signaller
Ensure excavator is in a safe condition for attachments to be fitted
Checked Load integrity and security by Carrying out trial Lift
Be able to Lift and move a Load to a designated position in a safe and controlled manner ensuring minimum uncontrolled movement
Environmental considerations
Carry out all of service and securing procedures

What is excavator as a crane?

Although excavators are primarily used for standard earthmoving and construction tasks, they can also be used within reason for lifting jobs. Operators can use an excavator as a crane if they are required to lift anything from concrete and metal pipes to other construction materials. This is included in the NPORS Excavator as a crane training – N100

Venue and equipment requirements:
  • Suitable and safe area to operate excavator
  • Varying terrain and slopes
  • 1 x bundle load
  • 1 x long load
  • 1 x load that is no more than 60% of the rated capacity of the of the machine @ 75% of its full working radius as per lifting chart
  • Area to lift and lower loads out of sight of operator
  • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
  • Suitable welfare facilities
  • 360° Excavator with lifting eye and SWL
  • Operators’ manual
  • Risk assessment completed
  • In date thorough test examination report for the machine
PPE requirements:
  • Suitable head protection
  • Suitable eye protection
  • Suitable hearing protection
  • Suitable work clothes including wet weather
  • Gloves
  • Suitable work boots including steel toe protection

Theory assessment:
  • 20 multiple choice questions
  • 5 written questions
  • 4 marks per question
  • 80% pass mark required
Practical assessment criteria:
  • Pre use and operational checks
  • Lift and lower 3 loads to designated landing position
  • Travel 30 metres with loads
  • Travel over varying and sloping ground
  • Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
  • Time allowed is 1 hour
