Training course type: On-site training and assessment, On-site Experience Worker Test (EWT) assessment only
Duration: 1-3 days, dependant on any previous experience
Minimum age: 16
Novice candidate numbers: 3

WHAT DOES THE A1 SAFETY TRAINING NPORS
ROAD ROLLER TRAINING COURSE INCLUDE?
Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for roller use
Prepare the roller for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the Work area
Operate machinery safely and efficiently
Environmental considerations
Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for Machine transportation
Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

What is road roller?

A road roller is a compactor-type engineering vehicle used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations. This is included in the NPORS Road roller training – N214

Venue and equipment requirements:
  • Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre machine
  • 15 metre straight line of uncompacted material
  • 5 – 10 metres radius curve of uncompacted material
  • Varying terrain and slopes
  • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
  • Suitable welfare facilities
  • Road roller
  • Operators’ manual
  • Risk assessment completed
PPE requirements:
  • Suitable head protection
  • Suitable eye protection
  • Suitable hearing protection
  • Suitable work clothes including wet weather
  • Gloves
  • Suitable work boots including steel toe protection
  • High Viz

Theory assessment:
  • 20 multiple choice questions
  • 5 written questions
  • 4 marks per question
  • 80% pass mark required
Practical assessment criteria:
  • Pre use and operational checks
  • Compact straight line 4 x width
  • Compact curve 4 x width
  • Drive through chicane, forwards and backwards
  • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain
  • Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
  • Time allowed is 1 hour
