TRAINING COURSE

Awarding Body: National Plant Operators Registration Scheme NPORS
Training course type: On-site training and assessment, On-site Experience Worker Test (EWT) assessment only
Duration: 1-5 days, dependant on any previous experience
Minimum age: 16
Novice candidate numbers: 3
Experience Worker Tests per day: 4
Variations: A3 – Pedestrian counterbalance lift truck B1 – Counterbalance lift truck up to and including 5 tonnes B2 – Counterbalance lift over 5 tonne & up to 15 tonnes B3 – Counterbalance lift truck over 15 tonnes B4 – Stand on counterbalance lift truck
Card options: 5-year NPORS traditional card & certificate, 2-year CSCS trained operator red card

WHAT DOES THE A1 SAFETY TRAINING NPORS
INDUSTRIAL COUNTERBALANCE LIFT TRUCK TRAINING COURSE INCLUDE?
Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with the manufacturers and legislative requirements
Safely mount and dismount the machine
Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, in open and confined areas
Conduct all the necessary safety checks at the work area
Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting and load handling tasks
Lift and transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations
Load and unload external transport safely
Fit, adjust and / or remove attachments
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

What is Industrial counterbalance lift truck?

The counterbalance forklift features two forks at the front and has the ability to drive up close to a load to pick it up and move it. The name comes from the counterweight in the rear of the vehicle. This is to compensate for the heavy load being lifted at the front. This is included in the NPORS Industrial counterbalance lift truck training N001

Venue and equipment requirements:
  • Suitable and safe area to lift and lower loads to 75% of total reach of machine
  • 3 x palletised loads (IBC containers or similar)
  • Lorry bed or flatbed trailer
  • Varying terrain and slopes
  • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
  • Suitable welfare facilities
  • Industrial counterbalance lift truck and attachments
  • Operators’ manual
  • Risk assessment completed
  • In date thorough test examination for machine
PPE requirements:
  • Suitable head protection
  • Suitable eye protection
  • Suitable hearing protection
  • Suitable work clothes including wet weather
  • Gloves
  • Suitable work boots including steel toe protection

Theory assessment:
  • 20 multiple choice questions
  • 5 written questions
  • 4 marks per question
  • 80% pass mark required
Practical assessment criteria:
  • Pre use and operational checks
  • Lift and lower palletised loads to a range of hights (low level, eye level, high level)
  • Load pallets on to trailer or similar
  • Stack pallets on top of each other
  • Place pallets next to each other
  • Drive through chicane, forwards and in reverse
  • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain
  • Pass mark is less than 40 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
  • Time allowed is 2 x time instructor sets
