Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
Have a working Knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular quick hitch to be used
Be able to locate and identify the major components of the Quick Hitch and explain their functions
Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Quick Hitch us
Be able to explain the different types of Quick Hitch devices
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
Conduct all necessary Safety checks at the designated change over area
Fit and remove attachments safely and efficiently
Demonstrate and explain checks for attachment security
Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

What is quick hitch awareness?
A quick hitch is a device that is fitted to an excavator, backhoe, telehandler, lift truck for the purpose of rapidly mounting or dismounting attachments. They are also known as ‘quick couplers’. There are a number of different types of. Quick hitches including manual, semi-automatic and automatic. This is included in the NPORS Quick hitch awareness training course – N726.

- Suitable and safe area to operate machinery
- Machine with quick hitch
- A range of attachments
- Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
- Suitable welfare facilities
- Operators’ manual
- Risk assessment completed
PPE requirements:
- Suitable head protection
- Suitable eye protection
- Suitable hearing protection
- Suitable work clothes including wet weather
- Gloves
- Suitable work boots including steel toe protection
- High Viz
Theory assessment:
- 8 written questions
- 4 marks per question
- 28 marks to pass
Practical assessment criteria:
- Pre use and operational checks
- Attach and discontent attachments
- Check attachments are coupled correctly
- Park machine safely
